The fastest and easiest way to San Diego from Indio is to drive south on 86 to Interstate 8 then west, across the Cuyamaca Mountains to San Diego. (usually so much wind on the eastern slopes that the bridges have wind blocks along the upwind railing as in picture above) The mountains aren't bare because of being above the timberline, they're just desert mountains with a little scrub greenery on the western slopes.
There are windmills near the top of the pass (that look to have had their blades either blown off or removed in preparation for 70 mph winds the day before). Also near the top of the 4200 ft. pass is the Golden Acorn Casino where we usually stop to pee. (OK, OK.... urinate for God's sake) On that day some guests were working on a snowman near the entrance which I photographed while walking past, making a beeline for the warmth of the indoors.
And then, of course, the pleasure of San Diego traffic through a maze of over and under (ever curving and circling) freeways. "Better move over a lane to your right Ernie.....no wait till you get past the next exit.....then stay there a mile or so till the I-5 split then get to the far left lane as quick as possible"
Then we finally got to the zoo. Now here's where I'm going to do something a little different. We've all been to the freakin zoo. Right? I DID take all the required pictures of all the lions and tigers and bears (all looking rather down about their pathetic lot in life). SO..... I'll just show one picture of one animal that I liked and that's it Mac. That's our trip to the zoo. (I don't even know what the damned thing's called) but there's my favorite picture.
The End. Later.
