These are extremely old palms that are now protected in a reserve. Look at the picnic table in the (left) picture for an idea of the size (click on pic to enlarge). Unfortunately the sun wasn't shining and the photos look kind of drab. The preserve looks like an oasis in a very arid mountainous area. This preserve is just east of Palm Springs and is used extensively by hikers. While I was there a group of about twenty were embarking. Walking through the grove reminds one of walking through the redwoods.
